Şehzade Mosque

Kalenderhane, Şehzade Cami, 34134 Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye

Şehzade Mosque is one of the city’s architectural gems, admired for its elegance and artistic perfection. Commissioned by the great Ottoman architect Mimar Sinan in 1543 under the orders of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent, the mosque was built in memory of the sultan’s beloved son, Prince Mehmed, who died tragically young. It stands as Mimar Sinan’s first major imperial mosque, showcasing his early mastery through its harmonious proportions, balanced symmetry, and graceful dome, flanked by four striking semi-domes. Visitors stepping into the mosque's serene courtyard encounter a tranquil setting, highlighted by beautiful marble arches, intricate tilework, and delicate calligraphy. Often overshadowed by more famous monuments, Şehzade Mosque offers tourists an intimate experience—away from crowds—where one can appreciate both the personal story behind its creation and the timeless artistry of Sinan, Istanbul’s most celebrated architect.
