The Bosphorus is probably the most iconic geographic feature of Istanbul. Stretching for 32 kilometers between Europe and Asia, this legendary strait has shaped civilizations, inspired empires, and continues to define Istanbul’s skyline. Whether you are here for a few days or a whole week, a Bosphorus experience is essential. The city cannot be understood without taking a Bosphorus cruise.
The shores of Istanbul along the Bosphorus were always garnished with beautiful flora, as you may see natural parks over the surrounding hills today as well. Moreover, the impressive architecture displays many of the spectacular faces of Istanbul as many houses, mansions, and palaces pass by before you.
What does Bosphorus mean?
According to the mythological literature, the word “Bosphorus” comes from Ancient Greek; it is a compound word “βοὸς” (Bos) + “πόρος” (poros), meaning cattle strait. The original name was written with a “π” (p) in Ancient Greek. Yet, in the Middle Ages, the word started to be written with a “φ” (phi), which transformed the spelling from “Bosporus” to “Bosphorus” and its derivatives in all the Romance languages (French, Spanish, Italian, etc.) and in Russian.
