Şerefiye (Theodosian) Cistern

Şerefiye Sarnıcı, Binbirdirek, Piyer Loti Caddesi, Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye

With a history spanning 1,600 years, the Şerefiye Sarnıcı (Theodosian Cistern) is one of the oldest water structures on Istanbul’s Historic Peninsula. It is widely believed to have been commissioned during the reign of Emperor Theodosius II (408–450 AD).Istanbul has always faced challenges, from population density to constant siege threats that required secure water storage. Both open and closed cisterns served the city for centuries, but grand underground structures such as the Şerefiye and Basilica (Yerebatan) Cisterns were mainly built to supply water to the Great Palace, the Nymphaeum, and the Baths of Zeuxippus.Covering about 24 by 40 meters, the cistern reaches a vaulted height of 11 meters. Its interior is supported by 32 elegant columns and topped with 45 sail vaults. The name "Şerefiye" was added later, taken from the Ottoman-era neighborhood that once surrounded the site. In Turkish, "Şerefiye" means "value" or "excellence," reflecting the area's historic prestige. The interior shows Late Antique precision. The columns have Corinthian-style capitals, each having intricate acanthus (bear's claw) leaves, all carved from fine Proconnesian marble from the Marmara Islands. To secure structural integrity against water pressure, the architects used 2.5-meter-thick walls reinforced with specialized waterproof plaster, with corners curved to distribute the weight.Today, the cistern has evolved from a vital building into an acoustic chamber. Through periodic concert series, the Şerefiye Cistern invites music lovers to experience a broad repertoire, from classical Turkish compositions to Western masterpieces, in an atmosphere where history and harmony resonate. The cistern is open from 10 am to 6 pm. Tickets can be purchased online or at kiosks next to the entrance. Up-to-date information on upcoming concerts and events is available on the official Şerefiye Cistern website or at the entrance to help visitors plan their booking.
