French Passage
Kemankeş Karamustafa Paşa, Fransız Geçidi Sokağı, Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Türkiye
The historic French Passage (Cité Française) in Karaköy is a Neoclassical arcade and trade center constructed in 1860. It was originally built to provide housing, storage, and office space for the French merchants and sailors who were very active in the region during the Ottoman era. The site became a central gathering point for these traders, which is why it is called "French Passage."Following a comprehensive restoration, the space now includes a hotel, restaurants, cafes, and boutique shops. The Italian gelato shop and restaurant within the passage are particularly famous in the area. The site is easily accessible by taking the T1 tram to either the Karaköy or Tophane stops, both within a five-minute walk.
