Bulgarian St. Stephen Church (Iron Church)
Sveti Stefan Kilisesi (Demir Kilise), Balat, Mürselpaşa Caddesi, Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye
Bulgarian St. Stephen Church, also known as the Iron Church due to its construction material, is one of the most striking monuments on the Golden Horn in Istanbul. Located between the Fener and Balat districts, the church was built in the 19th century for the Bulgarian community that separated from the Greek Patriarchate as part of the Bulgarian nationalist movement. It is unique as the only surviving iron church in the world. The structure was prefabricated by the Austrian Waagner Company in Vienna and shipped to Istanbul via the Danube River and the Black Sea. Its architecture features a distinctive blend of Neo-Gothic and Neo-Baroque influences. The church is open to visitors daily from 9:00 to 17:00, though it is recommended to plan your visit before 16:30.
