Abud Efendi Mansion (Yücel Arts Center)
Yücel Kültür Vakfı, Alemdar, Alemdar Caddesi, Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye
The Yücel Arts Center sits between Sultanahmet and Gülhane, right next to the Abud Efendi Mansion. This historic mansion from the late 1800s gives visitors a taste of heritage and culture just steps from Hagia Sophia and the Basilica Cistern. The colored marble selsebil (fountain) in the entrance hall is a beautifully preserved highlight. The mansion’s three main floors are decorated with hand-drawn ornamentation and fine woodwork, with ceiling decorations applied either directly on wood or on canvas. According to local lore, a renowned Ottoman artist once took refuge in the mansion during a storm and spent weeks painting the detailed landscapes that now decorate the third-floor ceilings. Some say he was inspired by the view from the mansion’s windows, capturing landmarks like the Maiden’s Tower and Sarayburnu, alongside village scenes believed to represent areas around Istanbul, and a panoramic view of Eminönü as seen from the distant Rumeli Fortress.Today, the mansion is owned by the Yücel Cultural Foundation, which awards scholarships to university students and hosts a variety of cultural events, including the traditional Whirling Dervish Ceremony. Additionally, guests can relax on the terrace beside the mansion, where a restaurant and bar offer views of Hagia Sophia.
