Fatih Mosque
Ali Kuşçu, Hattat Nafiz Caddesi No:6, 34083 Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye
Fatih Mosque, located in Istanbul’s bustling Fatih district, stands as a powerful symbol of the city's Ottoman heritage and spiritual heart. Commissioned by Sultan Mehmed II—the conqueror who gave the mosque its name—it was completed in 1470 atop the site of the former Church of the Holy Apostles, marking the emergence of Istanbul as the Ottoman capital. Though severely damaged by earthquakes and rebuilt in the 18th century, today's mosque preserves an elegant blend of classical Ottoman and baroque architectural styles, characterized by its expansive courtyard, graceful domes, and slender minarets. The complex also houses the tomb of Sultan Mehmed II, drawing visitors who pay respects to the legendary ruler. Surrounded by lively bazaars, historic streets, and vibrant local cafés, Fatih Mosque remains not only a place of worship but also a beloved gathering point where Istanbul's residents connect with both history and daily life.
