Surp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Patriarchal Church
Muhsine Hatun, Sevgi Sk. No:5, 34130 Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye
The Surp Asdvadzadzin Armenian Patriarchal Church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, stands as a significant historical landmark in the multicultural region of Kumkapı. With its current stone structure commissioned by Harutyun Amira Bezciyan and completed between 1826 and 1828 by the renowned architects Krikor Amira Balyan and Garabet Devletyan. After restorations in 1902 and 1985, the church became a key example of Armenian architecture in the Ottoman Empire. Inside, visitors will see a marble iconostasis, a beautiful screen dividing the congregation from the altar, and intricate decorative details. On the opposite side of the church is the Armenian Patriarchate of Constantinople, founded by the decree of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror in 1453. Beyond its structural character, the church is a profound visual library of Christian theology. The collection includes rich iconography, including depictions of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary, various saints such as St. George and St. Demetrios, and biblical scenes such as the Last Supper. These artistic details are significant pedagogical tools for representing sacred narratives and doctrines, offering visitors a window into Istanbul’s Armenian community's spiritual heritage.
