Yeldeğirmeni District
Memoria Resistancia Muralı - Inti, Rasimpaşa, Macit Erbudak Sokak, Kadıköy/İstanbul, Türkiye
Home to the most dynamic murals in the Kadıköy district, Yeldeğirmeni boasts striking street art like the "Giant of Kadıköy" mural by INTI and the vibrant works along Uzun Hafız Street. The area features landmarks such as the historic Hemdat Israel Synagogue and the neo-Gothic Ayios Yorgios Church. This mix of standout art, unique venues, and the city's coolest hipster hangouts makes Yeldeğirmeni a place full of fascinating stories.
Yeldeğirmeni (meaning "Windmill") takes its name from the 17th century when Sultan Abdulhamid I ordered windmills to be built to produce flour for bread. The original mills no longer exist, but visitors can find a small public art installation near the neighborhood center that commemorates this history. At the end of the 19th century, this part of the city grew rapidly into a residential area after devastating fires in the northern Üsküdar neighborhood of Kuzguncuk. The migration of Jewish and Christian communities led to the construction of Istanbul’s first apartment buildings here. Many still stand and can be admired on a stroll through the neighborhood.
By the 21st century, the area had become a haven for hipsters and creatives. To soak up the local atmosphere, head to the popular Küff Yeldeğirmeni, known for its cozy ambiance and specialty coffee. Or spend an evening at ArthereIstanbul, a café and creative space that hosts art exhibitions and live music. These spots are great for experiencing Yeldeğirmeni's vibrant community spirit. Students and foreign exchange students have also flocked here, making the neighborhood feel like the “Brooklyn of Istanbul.”
