The Burnt Gate (Yanık Kapı)

Sur Kapısı - Yanıkkapı, Emekyemez, Yanık Kapı Sokağı, Beyoğlu/İstanbul, Türkiye

Yanık Kapı (The Burnt Gate) is the only remaining inner gateway of the historic Galata walls. Built centuries ago by the Genoese, this ancient stone portal leads to medieval Istanbul. It once acted as an important checkpoint controlling trade between the active harbor below and the famous Galata Tower on the hill above. Originally named after a Christian saint, it earned its current Turkish name, Yanık Kapı, during the Ottoman era after devastating neighborhood fires turned its massive wooden doors to ash. Having miraculously survived both those fires and the widespread urban demolitions of the 19th century, this resilient hidden gem invites you to take a brief detour from the main roads to return to the past. If you look closely at the gate's inscription plaque, you can still spot three historic coats of arms carved side-by-side into the stone. Reading from right to left, those faint symbols represent the Duke of Genoa (De Merude), the official Republic of Genoa, and the influential Doria (D'Auria) family, who once governed the Galata district.
