Sepetçiler Kasrı (The Basketmakers’ Pavilion)
Sepetçiler Kasrı, Hoca Paşa, Kennedy Caddesi, Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye
Sepetçiler Kasrı (The Basketmakers’ Pavilion) was commissioned by Sultan Ibrahim in the 17th century on the site of the old Byzantine sea walls. Today, it is the only coastal pavilion left from those that once lined the outer gardens of Topkapı Palace.Sepetçiler Kasrı is a striking example of Ottoman coastal architecture. Its arched colonnades and wide porticos look out over the Golden Horn. The building features detailed stonework and wooden eaves, and from the upper terrace, you can see the Bosphorus. Inside, sunlight filters through latticed windows, creating patterns on the marble floors. There are several local stories about how the pavilion got its name. One idea is that it was called "sepetçi" (Basketmaker) because of the raised pavilions, known as fevkani structures, common in Edirne Palace. This style lets the building stand above the sea walls, keeping the rooms dry and giving the Sultan a clear view of the Bosphorus. Now the pavilion serves as the headquarters for the Yeşilay Society (Turkish Green Crescent). As a private institutional space, the building is not accessible to visitors. While the pavilion is not open to the public, visitors can enjoy excellent exterior views from the nearby park along Kennedy Avenue and from the walking paths that follow the shoreline just below the building.
