Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hammam

Yavuz Sultan Selim, Müstantik Caddesi Tarihi Küçük Mustafa Paşa Hamamı, Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye

Located in the Cibali neighborhood near the shores of the Golden Horn, directly opposite the Gül Mosque, this hammam (Turkish bath) was commissioned in the 15th century by Küçük Mustafa Paşa, from whom it takes its name. Küçük Mustafa Pasha was an important Ottoman statesman and vizier who lived during the reigns of Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror.Designed as a "double bath" (çifte hamam) with separate sections for men and women, the structure occupies approximately 1,300 square meters of a 2,000-square-meter plot. It strictly adheres to the traditional layout and spatial organization of classical Turkish baths. In both sections, the progression follows a logical sequence: the soğukluk (cold room/dressing area), the ılıklık (tepidarium/intermediate room), and the sıcaklık (the hot room), culminating in the halvet(private bathing cells). This architectural tradition, adopted by the Ottomans from Roman bathing culture, became a fundamental part of Ottoman urban culture. The soğukluk sections are square in plan and crowned by single domes. The cold room in the men’s section, in particular, is the most architecturally striking element of the building due to its dramatic sense of space and volume. Today, the venue serves a broader purpose, housing prestigious national and international cultural events, including the Istanbul Biennial.
