Ahırkapı Pier

Ahırkapı İskelesi, Sultan Ahmet, Fatih/İstanbul, Türkiye

Ahırkapı is one of Istanbul’s most unique spots where history and the sea connect. The Ahırkapı Pier, which gives the area its name from the word of “ahır” (stables or barn in English) because it was located directly in front of the gate leading to the stables of Topkapı Palace. Today, it serves as a peaceful haven opening onto the cool waters of the Bosphorus.Rising right next to the pier, the Ahırkapı Lighthouse was built in 1755 during the reign of Sultan Osman III to ensure the safety of sailors after a ship sank by crashing into these rocks during a stormy night. One of the oldest lighthouses in the Bosphorus, this historic structure has continued to serve as a guiding beacon, its white body winking at the Sea of Marmara for centuries.During the Byzantine period, the pier area was a strategic point where the imperial palace complex, particularly the magnificent Bukoleon Palace, met the sea. The ancient ruins you can see today as you walk along the shore are the magnificent remnants of the walls that have survived to the present day. Today, the walking and cycling paths that follow this historic route offer a unique route for those wishing to explore the city. The most appealing aspect of the pier, however, is the regular Bosphorus tours that depart from here. Tours operate hourly throughout the day, and advance booking is recommended during peak seasons. Tickets can be purchased at the small ticket kiosk next to the Topkapı Palace entrance gate or reserved online. On these tours, you can embark on a historical journey by listening to Istanbul’s maritime story in the most accurate and captivating way, thanks to a special audio guide service supported by Cogito with multi-language options.
